THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE ELDER FUTHARK - & BEYOND
by Francis TokarskiContinue
(This article is reposted from my pseudonymous writings on Elhaz Ablaze).
We tend to think that galdor has something to do with rune magic, in particular due to certain authors who have promulgated this view despite the lack of any historical evidence to that effect. The word’s roots run to the meaning of “magic song”, with the intimation of a birdsong. There is nothing in there about runes.…Continue
Many new rune students get overwhelmed by the numerous meanings of each rune. With all the written works available today it is easy to find multiple or even conflicting definitions from many authors on any given rune. Eventually as one works and meditates on the runes, however, a new comprehensive understanding begins to evolve within the Vitki.…Continue
The following is a mythological and historical analysis/interpretation of the “First Aett” (first group of eight runes) of the Elder Futhark, in respect to the etymology of each of the rune’s names, and in respect to each of the rune’s sounds (i.e, the phoneme that the grapheme stands for). It is expected that the reader already has an elementary familiarity with the Elder Futhark; and, if this is not the case, then please first read up on it, by referring to…Continue

Chant Like A Heathen
While we know little about archaic Germanic musical and magical practices, we can be pretty sure that they were into their singing and/or…Continue
AN INTRODUCTION TO RUNES
Or: A Very, VERY, VERY…Continue
When first looking at the runes online a few years ago what I perceived was a bunch of unfamiliar letters, not that I was a stranger to the runes, just that I had never thought about them. The runes seemed random to my uneducated mind, hard to memorize and devoid of individual meaning. That all changed the day I picked up a copy of Freya Aswynn’s “Northern Mysteries & Magick - Runes & Feminine Powers” - which was completely an impulse buy. Sure, I had thought about taking up a…Continue
How often does this happen in your life? I find it when I'm exploring my spirituality much more then when I'm hung up on mundane responsibility.
The story. I left work last night and tuned in to Coast to Coast am to see who was on the show. The show is good entertainment on a drive home. This time it was a discussion about the afterlife and the various ways spirits can reach us. Nothing new there. It was James Van Praagh. I find him to be a phony. I get home and do my internet surfing…Continue
This is a continuation of my first Blog about finding the Runes.
I left off in the last blog right as my interest in the Runes became rekindled. So nothing to do now but search the Web and a few books for any info I could find on them. Sounds easy enough!
So I hop online and let good ol' Google do the work. First the Wiki on Runic script. I find out that…Continue
So the time has come for me to write some promotional material, and I have a couple of reviews on Amazon to work with from Loclynn and Jason, and a little something by Jesse Panzer I can scrape together, but I haven't gone out of my way to call out to you for some reviews, critical feedback, good words, and other testimonials.
Testimonials are really important when it comes to books. Think about it... we're always recommending good books to others, and we will…Continue
This is a blog for that part of the journey everyone has been through and I find myself in right now!
No matter who you are or what you know now, I'm sure there was a time in your life before you knew Wunjo form Nauthiz, or Kenaz from Isa! Even in the Poetic Edda we read in Hávamál that Odin himself needed to sacrifice himself unto himself, hanging "on that tree of which no man knowsfrom where its roots run" just to be able to 'find the Runes'! If…Continue
I think the time has come for me to stop reading all of the information here and finally introduce myself. Obviously my name is Shanon – which is my real, birth name, and I first became aware of the runes about fifteen years ago or so. I did just as Loclynn said in one of his replies somewhere, and used them for that instant gratification – in divination, then I would go look up what it meant in the book that came with the set (Ralph Blum), and then would just move…Continue
I have been watching the clock a lot lately. This and the beginning of 2012 with all the talk of the Mayan calendar, Templar astrology, and the end of time... All of that has got me thinking about the runes and time. How did the Old Norse or Anglo-Saxons think of time? And how might the runes relate to the passing of time?
Not too long ago I did quite a lot of reading about the…Continue
For inspiration how to express Spirit. It came to mind of starting this blog where one can have an peak on how others create works and perhaps get inspired to express spirit Self. I am thinking of taking a photo of my medicine wheel done on deer skin as well.
What is your favorite way to express Spirit through Self creating art? …Continue
Hello, All! I am so delighted to have found this site. I now live in a very conservative community in which Norse studies have been abused. I am from Seattle and now live in Spokane, very close to the Idaho Panhandle of NeoNazi fame. I found a Meetup group for Norse beliefs, but they are rather inactive and not very supportive of newbies. Although I can imagine that they need to ensure their safety perhaps. Anyway, I met a fellow Norse Newbie and we have begun our own Rune study group,…Continue
As Tyriel suggested, I should blog a little about my upcoming experiences with the runes since I am very new to the subject. So a little about me first I suppose.
I'm 20 years old, working in an auto parts warehouse just outside of Glasgow.
So far I have little real understanding of the runes, honestly. Sure I can cast them, but the ability to really tap into them and understand them I'm still attempting to wrap my head around. I hope with this community you can…Continue
