This week I received a hand crafted Pipe from one of our members J, Miller. This site can not and should not be used for commercial enterprises. So I contacted Jason through Deviant Art and we made our arrangement's.

This is the Pipe.

Jason did not just make this Pipe, he in fact crafted it in a shamanic fashion. Using a brief outline of my totems he journeyed to fine the right spirit to craft it in.

I am sharing this here because over the years I have made a handful of life loge friends on the internet, these friends are areal as any others and in a few cases have proven more faithful then those I know in the flesh.   This site has the power to form these kind of deep and personal relationships.

"The sun looks diffident on this wall then it dose on that one and it looks very diffident on that wall over there, but it is the same sun that shines on all. AT the end of all the arguments there is a table of communion set for all who see past the smallness of difference." (wisdom of the Sufi)

Wow, looks like you've already journeyed with this ;-) What do the series of dots along the top of the pipe signify?

This is from Jason's journey.

"The journey was a good one - in that I saw lots but it rarely makes sense to me as the message is for the other person:
I met a dog guide who told me to tell you that 'no wyrd walker has an easy life'  and so the answers I found would not be for the current problem you face :\   I saw a compass- I think it was an old one like used on sailing ships and it pointed west.   Next I was flying through sky (kind of like Peter Pan I guess) and landed near the coast- but it wasnt in modern times as there were British Redcoats coning ashore in Tricorn hats with yellow facings on their coats.

Finally a Raven landed and talked to me- he was all black with a beak made out of wood like the pipe was made from- he had Othala in black on his beak.  He said that in order to make the pipe 'yours' and to tie in your magpie guide you need to paint the belly of the pipe white when you get it."

I will be journeying soon and will paint the belly white as is suggested.

Well when I started I knew that I wanted to be able to add all of the elements that were important to Loclynn, so I made a list of those he mentioned and of those that I saw were important to him in his profile.

To me Rune is metaphor and so I wanted the design of the pipe to reflect that- the Magpie was made out of a hardwood and was designed to carry the pipe much as the journey from the pipe would carry the message (similar to Odins Raven's as messangers).  I saw that he had a connection with Ing and Tyriels book and this sight have a lot to say on Ing: to me the seed of the ideas he would see in the Journey would grow into full fledged thoughts so Inguz went right on the beak closest to where the mouth would meet the stem.

Between the hardwood and the soapstone was a smal brass insert- mostly functional to allow for a tight seal but also symbolic of many parts making one whole.  The Soapstone part of the pipe is the business end where the functional aspects were important (no point to a pipe you cant smoke from) but the flat surfaces were perfect for adding in those elements that mattered:

The Dog, the Dragonfly, the symbol for fire (which I really like as it it Kenaz repeated), and Ophiuchus, all carried within the bird, the messanger for the seed of his ideas.

"symbolic of many parts making one whole" Gestalt is an idea that I have worked with for well over twenty years. The emergence of complexity out of simplicity is what has always attracted me to runes.

Back in the early 90's I had the good fortune to go to the Lakota sweat lodge. It was here that I was first introduced to the Chanupa Pipe. In the pipe ceremony. White Buffalo calf women is said to be the smoke of the pipe who takes the prayers up into the four winds.

This sacred understanding of the pipe has never left me and in so many ways the knowledge of the sweat lodge has enriched my understanding. When I smoke I am brought back to this simple idea. That the pipe is sacred and should never be abused.

I missed this thread because I've been distracted (as introverted writers and artists get, I'm sure many of you can relate). I'm happy with it though :)

There is a difference between the personal bonds formed over the internet with new potential friends, and the rather impersonal spam and transparently business-like members that sometimes show up on forums with no intention to be a part of the community.

I've witnessed both. I wouldn't call this pipe exchange 'commercial' at all.

Besides, I'm not going to remain entirely innocent on this matter, as soon I'll be adding a banner to advertise the book. However, given that it is The Book of Rune Secrets, that it's optional, and info/membership to the site has been free for years, I think we can suffer it, right? :)

I've been contacted many times by people who wished to advertise rune sets on the site, but I never found an arrangement that I could clearly say would be beneficial to everyone. So I refrained from that. I made my own runes, rather than purchased them. But I've seen some beautiful hand crafted sets.

Anyhow, just chiming in! Carry on :)

I wanted to support Jason in his role as a shaman, but also respect the integrity of this site. Deviant Art is a commercial site so it was a no brainier to work through that window.  We have some wonderful artists here at Rune Secrets.
